The Tones

or What Poe might have written if he lived today…

The ringing of the tones
The ringing and the ringing
of the tones, tones, tones, tones, tones

the jangling, and the rangling
the popping and the trilling
of the tones, tones, tones, tones, tones,
tones, tones, tones, tones

They shrill and bump

filling the air

with stomp and romp and trill
tones, tones, tones
Willing and frilling in the elevator

The rangling and the jangling
the pipping and the tripping
of the tones, tones, tones, tones, tones,
tones, tones, tones, tones

Let them hurtle against the walls
of the car and the subway
bouncing and flouncing
in their own way

Crilling and brilling
crackling and hackling
shaking and blasting

The dangling and the grangling
the trapping and the stapping
of the tones, tones, tones, tones, tones,
tones, tones, tones, tones

No one hears them coming
No one knows if they’ll end
They bend the sound waves
crumbling all sane men and women

the jangling, and the rangling
the popping and the trilling
of the tones, tones, tones, tones, tones,
tones, tones, tones, tones
