My Candle

Native to this darkened light
holding candles upside down
I try to hold the darkness high
and hold the light at bay
Letting nothing lead down the path
of hatred longing to escape
let the quiet somnambulant
waters of the darkened day
find a crevice filled with hope
to keep the sharks and evil tied
I break the morning dew with ropes
lashing my limbs at each stride

I hold the candle upside down
and hold the darkness high
Let the noon time sun be burned by
all the things I might not say
and let the dawning of all reason
come to each and every home
to not withhold the ever truth
from dawn to dusk and each his own
religion and a gun are friends
with spears and pens and laws
the things we want to make our peace
and safety are not all walls

I hold the candle upside down
and hold the darkness high
and pray that evening sun does still
hold me when I die
to burn my hopes and fears alike
and let me fall from grace
to build a fortress of my peers
our love and our embrace
to each and every other
we do not send away
but to each and every other
we offer safety from the light of day
to offer spoken treaties are
a cunning ruse of most
but now and then a word is needed
to ease and stir the host

so we hold our candles upside down
and hold the darkness high
so we, as one once said,
cannot see the difference in our eyes
we do not see the color of skin
we do not see the height or weight
we cannot notice little things
like fashion or an ugly face
we do however feel each other
with or without our hands
and know that each has scars and wounds
that cannot be bound by words
we can see the truth of hearts
the truth that love can bring

we hold our candles upside down
we hold the darkness high
for in that darkness like the night
we find our truth and love and hope
and find the dearest things we know
like the tears of joy
or all those things
that give us peace of mind
forgeting pains, and our scars
and keeping only what we’ve learned
to march to a different beat
and walking out line
we’re called absurd
but never dropping our darkened candles
from their sacred height
they carry us as much as not
and offer light of a different sort
we find the darkness purifying
helping, holding, loving, guiding
teaching us to reach a goal
far higher than we thought we’d get
but never out of reach

so we hold our candles upside down
we hold the darkness high
and sleep in darkness, safe from light,
from lies and treason grand,

so hold your candle upside down
and hold the darkness high
for love and life and hope and strife
are all of one and the same
we all are human, all are one
share our joys and tears
we all are human, all are one
and hold those truths so dear

I hold my candle upside down
I hold the darkness high
for never can I leave my friends
never can I go
to find a comfort when they are pained
and find a joy when they have sorrow
for love and life are all made clear
by friends and family alike
so come with us, my friend
I’ll lend you a candle to light
with darkness and safety sure
to hold up high against the light
until we all find peace
